Walmart is expanding aggressively in South Africa. With 21 new stores planned across Gauteng, KwaZulu-Natal, and the Western Cape, the world's largest retailer is creating thousands of new jobs — and most of them are accessible without years of experience. Here is what you need to know about getting hired.
What Is Happening With Walmart in South Africa
Walmart entered South Africa in November 2025 with its first two stores at Clearwater Mall in Roodepoort and Fourways Mall in Johannesburg. A third store followed quickly at East Point Shopping Centre in Boksburg. The response was strong enough that Walmart announced plans for 21 additional stores across South Africa, targeting Gauteng, KwaZulu-Natal, and the Western Cape.
This is not a new relationship. Walmart has owned Massmart — the South African retail group that operates Game, Makro, and Builders Warehouse — since 2011. What is new is the decision to bring the Walmart brand itself into the country, competing directly against Checkers, Pick n Pay, Spar, and Woolworths on price.
The strategy is built around what Walmart calls Every Day Low Prices (EDLP) — consistent low prices on everyday essentials without relying on promotional campaigns or loyalty points. Independent price comparisons have confirmed that Walmart's trolley of everyday essentials — bread, milk, eggs, rice, sunflower oil, sugar — comes in cheaper than the major competitors.
The Full Walmart Family of Brands in South Africa
When you apply for a job at "Walmart" in South Africa, you are entering an ecosystem of several major retail brands all operating under the Massmart umbrella. Understanding this matters — because if you cannot find a Walmart-branded store near you yet, there is very likely a Game, Makro, or Builders Warehouse in your area that is part of the same group and hiring on the same platforms.

What Jobs Are Available at Walmart and Massmart
Retail operations at this scale generate a wide range of roles. Here is a breakdown by category:
In-Store / Customer-Facing Roles
These are the highest-volume roles and the most accessible for people without extensive work experience:
Customer Service Representative — handling returns, complaints, and queries at the customer service desk
Fresh Food Department Staff — bakery, deli, and produce sections in Walmart's supercenter format
Floor Supervisor / Department Leader — managing a section of the store, leading a small team (typically requires 1-2 years retail experience)
Online Fulfilment and Delivery
Walmart's South African stores come with a 60-minute express delivery service. The rapid growth of this online channel — with 99% of first-time customers expressing an intention to reorder — means online fulfilment is one of the fastest-growing job categories:
Online Order Filler / Picker — selecting and packing customer orders for delivery
Delivery Driver — completing 60-minute express deliveries within an 8km radius of each store
E-commerce Operations Support — managing online orders, resolving delivery issues
Store Management
Assistant Store Manager — supporting store operations across departments
Store Manager — full P&L responsibility for a single Walmart location
Loss Prevention Officer — protecting store assets, monitoring for shrinkage

What Walmart Looks for in South African Employees
Walmart's culture globally — and in South Africa — is built around a few non-negotiable principles that come through consistently in how the company interviews and onboards:
Customer-first thinking. Walmart's entire pricing strategy is built around the customer. They want employees who genuinely care about the person in front of them, not just completing a task list.
Reliability and consistency. Retail operates on tight staffing models. Showing up on time and being someone teammates can count on is weighted heavily in hiring decisions.
Honesty and integrity. A global retailer of this scale has strong loss prevention and compliance expectations. Transparency is non-negotiable.
Team orientation. Store operations are inherently collaborative. Candidates who can demonstrate they work well with others — not just that they can do a task individually — stand out.
Adaptability. A new brand entering a new market moves quickly. Employees who can handle change, learn new systems, and adapt to evolving processes are particularly valued in this expansion phase.
Walmart in KwaZulu-Natal: What to Expect
KZN is one of the three provinces explicitly named in Walmart's 21-store expansion plan. While the initial rollout is concentrated in Gauteng, hiring for KZN stores will begin before those stores open — typically 6 to 8 weeks ahead of a store launch to allow for training.
In the meantime, the Massmart group already has a significant KZN footprint. There are Game stores in Durban, uMhlanga, Pinetown, Pietermaritzburg, and Richards Bay, as well as Makro and Builders Warehouse locations across the province. These are actively hiring and part of the same recruitment ecosystem.
How to Apply for a Walmart or Massmart Job: Step by Step
Use the official Massmart careers portal
Go to massmart.co.za and navigate to the Careers section. This is the primary portal for all Game, Makro, Builders Warehouse, and Walmart South Africa positions. You can filter by brand, location, and job type.
Check LinkedIn directly
Walmart and Massmart post actively on LinkedIn. Search "Walmart South Africa" or "Massmart jobs" and use the Jobs tab to filter by location. LinkedIn applications are often reviewed faster than job board submissions for head office and management roles.
Monitor Indeed South Africa
For store-level and operational roles, Indeed South Africa (za.indeed.com) aggregates Massmart's listings. Search "Game stores Durban," "Makro KZN," or "Walmart South Africa" to see current openings by location.
Apply to Game now — even if you want Walmart
Game is already established in KZN and is part of the same group. Retail experience at Game is directly transferable to a Walmart store, and internal transfers within Massmart are common. Getting in through Game now positions you well when Walmart opens locally.
Prepare a targeted application
For store-level roles, your CV should highlight: any customer service experience, reliability and attendance record, physical capability for a retail environment, and basic numeracy. A short cover letter referencing Walmart's Every Day Low Prices philosophy shows you have done your homework.
Watch for pre-opening hiring drives
When a new Walmart store is announced in your area, mass recruitment events typically happen 6 to 8 weeks before opening. These are often advertised through local newspapers, radio, and Massmart's social media. Apply as early as possible — competition for new-store positions is high and decisions are made quickly.
The Opportunity Right Now
South Africa's retail sector is at an inflection point. Promotional intensity has peaked, consumer loyalty is fragmenting, and a global giant with a genuinely different pricing philosophy is entering the market at scale. That kind of expansion creates real jobs — store-level, logistics, online fulfilment, and support roles — faster than most sectors in the current economy.
For job seekers in KwaZulu-Natal, the window right now is to get experience in customer service and retail operations — through Game or Makro today, or through a structured working interview — so that when the Walmart KZN hiring drive begins, you are an experienced candidate rather than a new applicant.
The stores are coming. The jobs will be there. The question is whether your application will be ready when they are.
