Built for South Africa's call-centre talent

Every call centre needs good agents. ShiftMate helps them find you, based on what you can do, not what's on your CV.

What call centre agent jobs involve

A call centre agent (also called a contact centre agent) talks to customers on the phone, and often on chat or email, for a company or a BPO that runs calls for other companies. It is one of the most common entry-level jobs in South Africa.

Inbound and outbound positions

Inbound agents answer calls: queries, complaints, account changes, technical help. Outbound agents make calls, usually sales, collections or follow-ups. ShiftMate assesses you for either customer service or sales, so call centres can match you to the right kind of vacancy.

How agents are measured

Call centres track things like average handle time (AHT), customer satisfaction (CSAT) and the quality of your notes in the system. That is why the assessment includes a call simulation where you type details into a customer record while you listen.

Shifts, contracts and pay

Most agent jobs run on shifts, sometimes including evenings and weekends, especially for international (offshore) campaigns. As an employee you are covered by the Basic Conditions of Employment Act (BCEA) and should be registered for UIF. Pay depends on the campaign, the city and commission; see our call centre salary guide for current figures.

Requirements for call centre agent positions

Every employer sets its own rules, but most ask for:

  • Matric (Grade 12). Some roles accept an NQF Level 4 equivalent.
  • A valid South African ID (or a valid work permit).
  • Clear spoken English. A second South African language is a plus.
  • Basic computer skills and steady typing.
  • Willingness to work shifts.
  • Experience? Many entry-level roles don't need it, though some ask for around 6 months. Many call centres train new agents.

Can I get a call centre agent job with no experience?

Yes. Many call centres hire entry-level agents and train them. The ShiftMate assessment looks at how you handle real situations, how you sound and how carefully you work, so you can show what you can do even if you have never worked in a call centre.

Do I need a CV to apply for call centre agent jobs on ShiftMate?

A phone or laptop with a microphone, a stable internet connection and a quiet spot. Sam talks you through every screen, so you don't need to prepare anything special.
