If you want to apply for a government job in South Africa, you will almost certainly need to complete a Z83 application form. But what exactly is it, why is it required, and how does it work? This guide explains everything you need to know before you apply.
TL;DR — Quick Answer
The Z83 is the mandatory application form for all South African government jobs — submit it incorrectly or incomplete, and your application gets rejected before anyone reads your CV.

The Z83 application form — officially titled "Application for Employment" — is the standardised job application document used by all South African national and provincial government departments when recruiting employees for public service positions.
The name "Z83" simply refers to the form's internal government reference number. It has no special meaning beyond identifying this specific document within the public service administration system.
Introduced to bring consistency to government recruitment across all departments, the Z83 replaced a fragmented system where different departments used different application formats. Today, regardless of whether you are applying to the Department of Health, Home Affairs, the South African Police Service, or any other government body, the same Z83 form is required.
Government job advertisements typically include a statement such as: "Applications must be submitted on the new Z83 Form, obtainable from any Public Service Department or at dpsa.gov.za." This tells you a Z83 is required for that position.
What Is the Purpose of the Z83 Application Form?
The Z83 form serves four important purposes in the government recruitment process:
Standardised screening across all departments
Because hundreds or thousands of people may apply for a single government vacancy, the Z83 gives selection panels a consistent format to review. Every applicant provides the same categories of information in the same layout — making it much faster to screen for minimum requirements and compare candidates fairly.
Legal compliance under the Public Service Act
The South African Public Service Act requires that all recruitment in the public service follows a formal, documented process. The Z83 is part of that legal framework. It creates an official paper trail that departments can refer to if a recruitment decision is ever challenged or queried.
Identity and eligibility verification
The form collects your South African ID number and personal details, allowing departments to verify that you are legally eligible to work in the public service and that you are who you claim to be.
Signed legal declaration
The Z83 includes a declaration section where you sign to confirm that all information provided is true and correct. This makes the Z83 a legal document. Providing false information on a Z83 is a serious offence under South African law.
Who Must Complete a Z83 Form?
You must complete a Z83 form when applying for any position at a national or provincial government department listed under the Public Service Act. This includes:
Department of Health
Department of Home Affairs
Department of Education
Department of Labour and Employment
South African Police Service (SAPS)
Department of Justice and Constitutional Development
Department of Social Development
Any other national or provincial government department

The Z83 is generally not required for:
Private sector job applications
Local municipality vacancies (municipalities typically use their own forms)
State-owned enterprises such as Eskom, Transnet, PRASA or SAA (they use internal HR systems)
Important: Even if you attach a comprehensive CV, you must still complete the Z83 in full. Your CV does not replace the form — it is a separate legal requirement that must accompany every government job application.
What Information Does the Z83 Form Require?
The Z83 is divided into six main sections, each collecting different types of information about the applicant.
Part A — Post Details
The specific job you are applying for: exact job title, reference number, department name and closing date. These details must be copied exactly from the job advertisement. A wrong reference number is one of the most common reasons applications are misrouted or lost.
Part B — Personal Information
Your full legal name (exactly as it appears on your ID), South African ID number, date of birth, gender, nationality, home language, disability status, residential address and contact details including cell number and email address.
Part C — Education and Training
Your formal qualifications listed from highest to lowest, including the institution name, type of qualification and year of completion. Include any relevant learnerships, short courses or skills programmes that relate to the position you are applying for.
Part D — Work Experience
Your complete employment history starting from your most recent position. For each role you must provide the employer name, your job title, start and end dates (month and year), and your key responsibilities. This section must be completed in full even if you attach a CV — the form and the CV are both reviewed.
Part E — References
At least two professional references, typically former supervisors or managers, who can confirm your work history and character. Personal references such as family members or friends are generally not acceptable.
Part F — Declaration and Signature
Your signed declaration that all information on the form is accurate. An unsigned Z83 is automatically rejected — no exceptions. Sign in ink and include the date.
The 2021 Z83 Update — What Changed?
The Z83 form was significantly revised in January 2021. If you have a saved copy of an older version, it is no longer valid and your application will be rejected if submitted on the old form.
The key change introduced in 2021 was a self-certification clause. Under the previous system, applicants were required to submit certified copies of all supporting documents (ID, qualifications, etc.) with their initial application. Under the updated system:
At the time of application — you declare that the attached copies are true and correct (self-certification)
If shortlisted — you are then required to submit certified originals before the interview stage
This change was introduced to reduce the burden on applicants at the initial stage, while still ensuring proper verification happens for shortlisted candidates.
Always download a fresh Z83 form for each application. Do not reuse a saved copy from a previous application — the form may have been updated. Download directly from dpsa.gov.za or from the specific department advertising the vacancy.
Why Many Z83 Applications Are Rejected
Government departments receive enormous volumes of applications and eliminate a significant percentage at the initial administrative screening — before the selection panel ever reviews the actual content. The most common reasons for automatic disqualification include:
